Oven and cooktop repairs
Oven, cooktop and waste disposal repairs in Westmere
An oven that will not heat or a cooktop that trips the power takes the kitchen out of action. We repair the electrical faults in ovens, cooktops and waste disposals in Westmere homes, and check the circuit that feeds them while we are there.

What we repair, and what we do not
Most oven and cooktop failures are electrical: a burnt-out element, a thermostat that no longer reads the temperature, a worn selector switch, a fan that has stopped, or a connection at the back of the appliance that has overheated. Those are the repairs we carry out, on freestanding ovens, wall ovens and cooktops alike. A stove usually has its own circuit on the switchboard, sized for a large appliance, so when the oven trips the power we check that circuit and its connection as well as the appliance. In an older Westmere house that has been renovated over the decades, the circuit feeding the stove may belong to an earlier kitchen than the one you cook in now.
We also repair the electrical side of waste disposals: the switch, the wiring and the motor's supply. A disposal that is jammed, leaking or needs its plumbing changed may need a plumber or an appliance specialist instead, and we will tell you which. One firm limit: we do not repair fridges or washing machines, which need an appliance repairer.
Faults we see most often
The oven will not heat
Grill works but bake does not, or the fan runs and nothing warms up: usually an element, a thermostat or the selector switch.
The power trips when it is switched on
An element or wiring fault to earth, which needs testing before the oven is used again.
An element will not turn off
A switch or relay stuck on. Switch the stove off at its isolating switch or the switchboard and call us.
The cooktop is slow or uneven
One ring not heating, or stuck on high, is often a single element or its control.
The waste disposal hums or is silent
Humming usually means a jam; silence can be the switch, the supply or the motor's own protection.
Kitchen fire safety
Fire and Emergency New Zealand says one in four house fires starts in the kitchen, and that unattended cooking is the leading cause of house fires in New Zealand. Its kitchen fire safety advice includes cleaning rangehood filters regularly, making sure upright stoves are securely fastened to the wall, and, if a fire starts inside the oven, turning off the power at the stove or at the mains.
An electrical fault adds risk of its own. An element that will not switch off, scorch marks around the stove's connection, or a burning smell when the oven heats are reasons to stop using it and switch it off at the isolating switch. If that happens at night, our 24/7 emergency service covers it.
Repair or replace?
A good oven with a failed element or thermostat is usually worth repairing. When an appliance is old and several parts are going at once, replacing it can make more sense, and if you are moving to an induction cooktop the circuit may need upgrading too. We will tell you honestly which way we would go. Where a new appliance needs a new or heavier circuit, the switchboard is checked as part of the same job.
Oven and cooktop questions
Do you repair gas cooktops?
We repair the electrical parts of an appliance, such as the ignition or the electric oven in a dual-fuel cooker. Gas work itself needs a licensed gasfitter.
Can you fit a replacement oven?
Yes. We can disconnect the old oven, check that the circuit suits the new one, and connect it, so it is wired and tested properly.
Do you repair fridges and washing machines?
No. We repair ovens, cooktops and waste disposals. Fridges and washing machines need an appliance repairer.
The oven tripped the power once. Can I keep using it?
If it tripped once and has worked normally since, keep an eye on it. If it trips again, or there was a smell, a bang or smoke, leave it switched off at its isolating switch until it has been tested.
My hot water has gone cold as well. Can you look at that too?
Yes. We repair the electrical side of hot water cylinders, and if the cylinder or its plumbing needs work we will also provide a fully insured and qualified plumber.
